Fired UK Border Chief Urges Home Secretary to Overhaul Department to Avoid Security Risks

Recently dismissed borders watchdog David Neal has urged Home Secretary James Cleverly to shake up the Home Office, warning lack of oversight could lead to further major security breaches.

Neal, axed as independent chief inspector of borders and immigration last week, said with no replacement recruited yet, ministers will have to depend on the same officials who previously missed risks like Tug Haven and Manston.

In an article, Neal implored Cleverly to look beyond officials and determine ground realities, arguing public confidence demands it.

With 15 unpublished inspection reports pending, Neal’s rushed exit leaves several key investigations incomplete, including on Rwanda policy and asylum housing like the Bibby Stockholm barge.

He warned planned inquiries on immigration detention, Channel migrants and age assessments also cannot start now. There will be no scrutiny of new Rwanda policy material, Neal cautioned.

Neal was sacked after disclosing alleged City Airport security lapses to media, which he claims was due to inability to inform ministers and disinterest from officials.

While defending the Home Office publicly, Cleverly must privately overhaul the department to restore public trust, Neal stressed. With independent scrutiny gone, he argued only resolute actions starting from the top can avoid repeating past oversights.
